A midwife can be contacted at any time in a woman's life , whether for questions related to gynecological health, contraception, pregnancy, birth or postpartum.However, it is most common to contact a midwife once the pregnancy has been confirmed , or a little later depending on needs.In the canton of Fribourg , it is recommended to choose your midwife before the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy , in order to properly prepare for the birth and return home with complete confidence.

During pregnancy:If you are healthy with a straightfoward pregnancy, you are entitled to:7 appointments (midwifery and obstetrician led)Up to 150 francs for birth preparation classes (individual or group childbirth classes or pregnancy yoga, aquagym classes by a midwife)If necessary, on medical prescription, the number of midwife and/or doctor check-ups can be adjusted.During childbirthInsurance covers home births, in a mideife led centre or a hospital provided that the latter two establishments are on the hospital list of the canton of residence. Assistance from a doctor or midwife is included.If you wish to give birth in hospital, you can call your independent midwife for a pre-labor check.After birth- If this is a first baby, or if the baby was born prematurely, by caesarean section, and/or in the case of a multiple pregnancy, you are entitled to 16 postnatal home visits.- If this is not your first baby, and baby was born vaginally after 37 weeks gestation, you are entitled to 10 postnatal home visits.If necessary, more visits may be prescribed by your medical team (gynecologist or pediatrician for example). Please note! The prescription must be made in the mother's name, even if the check-up is for the baby....if you choose to breastfeed:You are entitled to 3 consultations, throughout the entire duration of your child's breastfeeding journey, whether at 3 weeks, 3 months or 3 years.
