What does the health insurance cover?
In Switzerland, pregnancy and childbirth care is covered by the compulsory health insurance. The conditions under which health care is covered are set out below. All healthcare costs are covered from the 13th week of pregnancy until 8 weeks after the birth, with no franchise or co-payment. (Lien: BAG)
Pregnancy care
For a straightforward and healthy pregnancy all women get:
-
7 check-ups (provided by midwives and/or doctors)
-
Up to 150.- francs remimbursement for in private or group antenatal lessons.
If required, the number of midwife and/or doctor check-ups can be adapted with a medical prescription.
Labour and birth care
The insurance covers childbirth at home, in a hospital or in a birthing centre, provided that the latter two establishments are on the list of hospitals in the canton of residence. The attendance and care provided by a doctor or midwife are included.
If planning a hospital birth, your chosen independent midwife can come to your home for an early labour assessment.
Postnatal care
-
If it is a first baby, or if the baby was born prematurely, by caesarean section, and/or in the case of a multiple pregnancy:
-
16 home visits are covered.
-
-
If it is not a first baby, born vaginally
-
10 home visits are covered.
-
If necessary, more visits can be prescribed by the doctor (Please note! The prescription must be made out in the mother's name, even if the home visit is for the baby).
...if you choose to breastfeed
You have the right to 3 consultations, to be used over the entire duration of your breastfeeding journey, whether your child is 3 weeks, 3 months or 3 years old.
