Understanding Your Cycle: The Fifth Vital Sign & Fertility Awareness based methods

The menstrual cycle is a vital sign—yes, the fifth vital sign.
It provides valuable insight into a woman’s overall health and wellbeing. By understanding your cycle, you gain the ability to manage your fertility—whether you wish to avoid pregnancy or hope to conceive.

It doesn’t matter whether:

  • you want to become pregnant—or prefer not to,

  • your cycle is regular—or irregular,

  • your periods are painful—or comfortable,

  • you have recently given birth,

  • or you are considering stopping hormonal contraception—

I can guide you in learning how to chart your cycles and use that knowledge to support your reproductive health, achieve your fertility goals, and improve your overall wellbeing.

Charting your cycles in a few words...

Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABMs), sometimes known as natural family planning, are approaches that help you track the body’s natural signs of fertility throughout the menstrual cycle—such as basal body temperature, cervical mucus, and cycle patterns. By identifying your fertile window, you and your partner can choose to have sex during that time if you wish to conceive, or avoid pregnancy by abstaining on fertile days or using a barrier method (such as condoms).

Beyond fertility, charting can also offer valuable insight into your overall health. Your cycle charts can help highlight patterns linked to factors such as sleep, stress, physical activity, and nutrition. With this information, you may be able to adjust certain habits, support hormone balance, ease symptoms such as PMS, painful periods, or irregular cycles, and improve your general wellbeing. Charting can also indicate when further medical assessment may be helpful.
